Over $240,000 in Drugs/Cash Seized

An investigation by undercover drug officers has resulted in eight persons being arrested and over $240,000 in cash and drugs being seized over the weekend.

On Friday, August 15th, 2008, investigators from the Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) were conducting surveillance outside an Oshawa residence as part of an ongoing police investigation into drug trafficking in Durham Region. Uniformed officers conducted a traffic stop on a car leaving the residence and found the lone male occupant in possession of 10.4 pounds of packaged marihuana, concealed inside a guitar case and a duffle bag. The male was arrested and charged.

Uniformed officers conducted a second traffic stop on a car leaving the residence and arrested the lone male occupant. While searching the car, officers discovered a loaded .9mm handgun, $80,000 in cash and five cell phones.

Investigators attended an address on MacInally Court in Oshawa and arrested six males. A search warrant was obtained and investigators seized a hockey bag with 24.4 pounds of packaged marihuana, 3.6 grams of cocaine, 167 grams of hash and weigh scales.

Investigators seized over $9,000 in Canadian currency and $111,700 in street drugs.

Ruben MELO, age 29, of Rue Park, Quebec is charged with:

Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking, Trafficking in a Controlled Substance, Possession-Proceeds of Crime, Unauthorized possession of a Firearm in a Vehicle, Careless Storage-Firearm, Possession of Restricted Firearm with Ammunition, Possession of Un-authorized Firearm and Tampering with Serial number

Six other males, including the homeowner are facing a combined list of 13 other drug related charges and held for bail hearings.
